The National Athletics Center Selected as One of the World’s Best Sports Buildings

The National Athletics Center has once again received international recognition: the facility has won the prestigious architectural award from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS).

The award was accepted by Zoltán Nyul, Deputy State Secretary for Building Construction, representing the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM). The jury selected the National Athletics Center from 69 entries from 25 countries, which proved to be the best in the category of sustainable, barrier-free, and innovative sports facilities. The award for the center was presented in Cologne at the 29th IAKS Congress gala, where the world’s leading sports architecture was celebrated.

A significant part of the domestic construction industry contributed to the realization of the National Athletics Center.

The new crown of the queen of sports, the National Athletics Center, was built on an abandoned brownfield site in the southern part of Ferencváros, on the site of the former Vituki industrial plant. The goal was twofold: to create a world-class sports facility that not only preserves but also highlights the exceptional characteristics and natural values of the area, while also appealing to city dwellers, whether for sports, recreation, or even a splendid riverside walk. One of the most significant construction projects of recent decades was realized with investment from the Ministry of Construction and Transport, under the leadership of architect Marcell Ferencz, winner of the Kossuth, Ybl, and Pro Architectura awards.

The Hungarian Builders’ Association’s consolidated list shows that a significant part of the domestic construction industry was involved in the realization of the National Athletics Center. The general construction was carried out by ZÁÉV Zrt. and Magyar Építő Zrt. The project was supervised by a consortium consisting of Főber Zrt. and Óbuda-Újlak Zrt., while the general design was carried out by NAPUR Architect Kft.
