Hungary will support all initiatives promoting peace at the UN General Assembly and reject any proposals that could lead to escalation, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, emphasized on Monday in New York.
The minister recalled that after World War II, the founders of the UN could hardly have imagined that eighty years later, the threat of global conflict would loom once again. Although armed conflicts have been successfully mitigated in several regions in recent months, no progress has been made with regard to the war in Ukraine.
Unfortunately, pro-war voices in Europe continue to be much stronger than pro-peace voices,”
he said.
According to FM Szijjártó, it became clear during the preparations for the UN General Assembly that Brussels is trying to reinforce the narrative surrounding the war in Ukraine rather than bringing the voice of peace to New York. He believes this is a dangerous direction that only increases tensions.
The foreign minister is also holding a number of bilateral talks during the General Assembly, mainly with African and Southeast Asian partners, and six intergovernmental agreements are being signed. These concern economic cooperation, scholarship programs, and political consultations.
He made a special mention of Africa, which he called the “continent of opportunity.” In his view, explosive population growth can be an advantage if appropriate economic development programs are put in place.
If we cannot keep the growing population at home, it will either result in a huge humanitarian catastrophe or these people will start to move. And where will they go? To Europe,”
he warned.
The minister emphasized that Hungary is trying to contribute to the development of the continent with its own resources. “We Hungarians are doing our part here with scholarship programs, economic development, humanitarian programs, and tied aid loan programs, which are primarily aimed at water management and food security,” he said, adding that these will enable Africa to keep its own population at home.
