Thousands to Dive In This Saturday

After postponing it twice due to poor weather, the 43rd Lidl Balaton Cross-Swim between Révfülöp (northern shore) and Balatonboglár (southern shore) is officially set to take place this Saturday, organizers have confirmed.

The decision came following favorable weather forecasts from the HungaroMet (Hungarian Meteorological Service) in Siófok (southern shore). Based on their assessment—and with the approval of the Balaton Water Police—event organizer Budapest Sports Office (Budapest Sportiroda) (BSI) announced that the event can safely go ahead this weekend.

According to forecasts, Saturday morning will bring light and variable winds, with only minor southwesterly breezes expected by midday. Organizers say this will not cause significant waves. Some cloud cover may filter the sunshine during the day, but no rain is anticipated. Temperatures are expected to rise quickly from a mild 21°C at dawn to around 33°C by the afternoon, while the lake water is forecast to be a pleasant 23–24°C.

Originally scheduled for July 26, the event had reached full capacity a month in advance. With the new date confirmed, registration has reopened for all distances: the classic 5.2 km swim, the SUP (stand-up paddleboard) crossing, and the 2.6 km half-distance.

“We were just as disappointed as the 13,000 registered participants when weather conditions forced us to delay the 43rd Lidl Balaton Cross-Swim,” said Árpád Kocsis, head of Budapest Sports Office (Budapest Sportiroda). “Now that the storm clouds have cleared and the weather looks perfect, we are excited to welcome everyone back to be part of Europe’s largest open-water swimming event. Everything is ready!”
