Tihany Turns Purple – Pick Your Own Flowers during Lavender Weeks!

Lavender began blooming weeks earlier than usual this year, providing a beautiful purple carpet in the lavender fields around Lake Balaton since the beginning of June. The peak of the blooming season coincides with one of the Tihany Peninsula’s most popular events, Lavender Weeks, which began last week and will last until the end of the month, Sokszínű Vidék reports.

It is fitting that one of the country’s most renowned lavender festivals takes place in Tihany (northern shore of Lake Balaton). Industrial-scale lavender cultivation first began in Hungary in the 1920s, and the peninsula’s volcanic soil and unique microclimate have provided ideal conditions for the plant ever since.

The lavender grown here is spectacular and extremely rich in essential oils — a real treasure lovers of nature and the fragrant plants.

One of the most popular Lavender Weeks attractions is the “pick your own” event, that runs from June 13 to June 29 in the famous Tihany lavender field.

The field is located at the Gödrösi junction next to Route 7117. Visitors are welcome every day from 9:00 a.m., but the opportunity to pick flowers may vary depending on the weather and flower stock. Therefore, it is worth checking the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate website in advance.

Lavender Weeks is not just about flowers.

During the festival, organizers offer cultural and entertainment programs, including craft workshops, concerts, and themed walks.
