Transylvanian Design Week Shines New Light On Traditions

“The New Middle Ages” is the theme of this year’s Transylvanian Design Week (TDW) exhibition, on display between March 20 and April 20 at the Szekler Museum of Ciuc in the town called Ciuc (Csíkszereda, located in Central Romania).

The exhibition that explores the role and impact of visual culture today will feature works by more than 50 Transylvanian and international designers. TDW aims to showcase and connect Transylvanian designers.

The exhibitors will present their work in four categories: fashion design, graphic design, product design and motion design.

Aranka Karda-Markaly, director of the Szekler Museum of Ciuc, said that this year’s TDW exhibition “creates a dialogue between the material world of the past and the present in a unique way.” Some of the museum’s exhibits and the works of the designers will be displayed together.

The event is not only a new way of presenting cultural heritage, but also proof that design and tradition are not opposites, but are in a mutually reinforcing and evolving relationship. According to curator Gyárfás Oláh,

the theme of the exhibition was inspired by today’s political situation and the curiosity of “how much designers are affected by what is happening in the world today.”

The exhibition will open on March 20 with a guided tour by Gyárfás Oláh and cultural researcher Anna Keszeg. On March 21, Design Talks will feature professional presentations and discussions for designers. Both events are subject to registration.

On March 22, a Design Fair will be held, and on April 1, Brands in Motion will showcase commercials and applied animation works by Transylvanian brands.
