The festival, which begins on April 21 in Trieste and is dedicated to the memory of Giorgio Pressburger, aims to restart and strengthen cultural ties between Italy and Hungary, and more broadly, the entire Central European region.
Mauro Caputo, head of the festival’s organizing committee said that the cultural program, which will run until April 26, aims to rebuild the cultural bridge between Italy and Hungary, as well as the dialogue that has been a hallmark of the communities of the Central European region for millennia. The festival, named TriBu.City Fest, is organized by the cities of Trieste and Budapest, but participation is open to all of “Central Europe.”

The festival commemorates Giorgio Pressburger, who was born in Budapest in 1937 and died in Trieste in 2017. The writer, director, and former head of the Italian Cultural Institute in Budapest, who had close ties to both countries and their cultures, led the Mittelfest Central European cultural festival in Cividale del Friuli, 70 kilometers from Trieste, for more than ten years.

Across his body of work, Pressburger claimed that the city of Trieste was the ideal meeting point for the European cultures represented by Budapest and Rome. “Pressburger was the driving force behind Italian-Hungarian cultural relations, and we are starting again with him,” said director and screenwriter Mauro Caputo, who had worked closely with him.
The Galleria Tergesteo in the center of Trieste was chosen as the venue for the festival. For a week, representatives of literature, fine arts, music, theater, and film will meet, and numerous cultural associations and institutions from Italy and Hungary have indicated their participation, including the Hungarian Academy in Rome.

Mauro Caputo said that several Hungarian cities with historical ties to Trieste will also be present, and that there is interest in the event from Slovenia and Croatia as well.
“We are filling a gap by once again creating a common home for Central European culture in Trieste,” Mauro Caputo said. He added that the organizing committee plans to hold the festival every year. Their goal is for the city to once again play an active role in the “European cultural arena,” which now also has significant economic implications.
The program has not yet been made public, but Mauro Caputo said that the festival will open with an exhibition dedicated to Giorgio Pressburger. Musical events will include a Central European ball with costumes from the 1800s and a chess tournament, also in memory of Pressburger, who was a well-known chess player.
