Trump Prescribes Antifa as Terrorist Group. Will the EU Follow Suit?
Antifa group blocking the road in Brussels.
In Hungary Today we have reported several times about the 2023 violent attack perpetrated by the extremist far-left group Antifa in Budapest. Now that the White House has designated the anarchist organization responsible for countless instances of political violence, will EU governments continue to shield it, or will they clamp down on these thugs in black?
In February 2023 a group of Italian and German Antifa thugs have randomly attacked tourists and innocent passers-by in Budapest, beating them to an inch of their lives with hammers and other objects. A number of them were arrested and faced trial by Hungarian authorities, others have fled abroad. What followed was an international hate campaign against Hungary for allegedly violating the rights of the perpetrators, accusations of inhumane prison conditions, and so on, orchestrated by one of the Antifa thugs fathers, George Soros funded NGOs and the far left in the European Parliament.
The German government has award an an Antifa-woman charged with attempted murder with EUR 48 000.

One of the members of the ultra-violent Antifa group, Ilaria Salis was freed by Hungarian authorities after being elected member of the European Parliament, from where she continues to lambast Hungary for alleged “human rights violations”. Another one of the accused, Hanna Schiller, has reportedly even been awarded EUR 48 000 by the German government for a work of art depicting “structural sexism and the refugee crisis”.
But Hungary has so far been spared of the systemic violence that this violent anarchist organization is known for, unlike other EU member-states, such as Germany or Belgium. In the Belgian capital Brussels Hungary Today’s reporters have had the chance to experience the violence and intimidation perpetrated by members of Antifa during the NatCon Conference in 2024. In fact the Hungarian think-tank MCC Brussels is under constant pressure from Antifa thugs who use tactics of threats and intimidation making their public events almost impossible. But the situation is perhaps even worse in countries such as Germany or France, where political violence has reached levels not seen since the end of WWII.
It is no secret that Antifa enjoys the political protection of Europe’s left-wing parties. They are supported by progressive bureaucrats and judges as long as they are useful in suppressing any national-conservative dissent against the currently dominant liberal establishment. This may change soon though, should other countries governed by conservative parties follow Donald Trump’s example, and designate Antifa as a terrorist organization.

This week U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social informing that “I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A.
Patriots that I am designating Antifa, a sick, dangerous, radical left disaster, as a major terrorist organization. I will also be strongly recommending that those funding Antifa be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices,”
the President announced.

This is a major, and by many accounts, a long-overdue step. The brutal political violence and intimidation or material damage linked to this far-left extremist group has been a serious anomaly co-existing within our democracies, where even people silently praying in front of abortion clinics, or those criticizing illegal migration on social media have been handed long prison sentences, while these radicals got away scot-free. The assassination of U.S. Christian influencer Charlie Kirk has probably a lot to do with the decision, but the emphasis on going after those who fund these extremist groups could have even more far reaching consequences.
President Trump, but also US Attorney General Pam Bondi, or the president’s policy adviser, Stephen Miller, have pointed the finger at the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and its founder, U.S. oligarch George Soros for being complicit in financing disorder and political violence across the U.S. As a matter of fact, Soros-funded NGOs are undermining political freedoms all across Europe, from Ukraine to Hungary. For decades, Europe’s left has benefited from Antifa’s violence against Christian, conservatives or nationalist groups, while in return they shielded these extremists under the pretext of freedom of speech or assembly.
This was not simply a case of complacency, but that of active complicity.

But the veil is off now. The European civil sector is drowning in OSF money, just like the German Marshall Fund, that has only recently called for serious sanctions against conservative Hungary. Should the EU ignore Donald Trump’s crackdown on violent political extremism, they will look seriously out of touch with public sentiment, and with time their democratic credentials could be called into question. Only a few years ago, the existence of the violent and anti-democratic “Soros-network”, as referred to by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, was dismissed only as a Hungarian far-right conspiracy. Now, as it is being accused of funding domestic terrorist groups in the United States, the European left’s reliance on intimidation by riots and all-too-convenient anarchist “counter-demonstrations” may soon become and untenable liability.
