Tusványos Is a Platform for Dialogue

The 34th Bálványos Summer University, better known as Tusványos, is taking place this year under the motto “You can count on us,” with the aim of providing a point of reference for participants even in times of global uncertainty, Maszol reported. At a press conference held in Sfântu-Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy), Zsolt Németh, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly, emphasized that Tusványos is not only a cultural and political meeting place, but also a common platform for pragmatic Transylvanianism and realistic conservatism.

The extraordinary richness of the program is well illustrated by the fact that this year, around 500 events are expected, with 1,000 speakers and 40 venues. The guests include several renowned foreign politicians, such as former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, British Conservative politician David Frost, and guests from the Middle East and South America. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will also attend the event on behalf of the Hungarian Government and is expected to make a “groundbreaking” announcement.

Tusványos also sees an important role for itself in developing Hungarian-Romanian relations. Zsolt Németh congratulated the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) on its election success, which he called a victory for the Hungarian community in Transylvania, and emphasized that the goal is cooperation based on mutual respect, for example with the new Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and representatives of the relevant ministries. At the same time, the camp distances itself from party political campaigns – although opposition figures will also be present, political debates will not take place on the main stage.

As he put it, “Tusványos is not a campaign venue.”

The foreign policy panel discussions will focus on the United States’ resurgent role in world politics and the redefined approach to the war in Ukraine. According to Németh, the current U.S. strategy has not brought the expected results, so new ideas are needed, which the European Union must also join.

At the same time, Tusványos makes it clear that although it is organized along the lines of patriotism, sovereignty, and conservative values, it does not wish to associate itself with extremist or anti-minority parties, including the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). This is precisely why Fidesz did not join the European Conservatives faction, but instead founded an independent “Patriots for Europe” group in the European Parliament.

Overall, Tusványos remains a center for identity politics dialogue, where national values and political realism meet in the service of the future of Hungarians living beyond the border.
