Two Towns Represent Hungary in Prestigious Flower Competition

Nyíregyháza, located in the northeastern part of Hungary, and Varsány, in northern Hungary, will represent the country in the anniversary competition of Entente Florale Europe, the European Flower Towns and Villages. A jury of renowned experts visited Hungary at the end of June to personally evaluate the two towns.

During the visits, the panel of experts worked with local communities to review the towns’ efforts in the area of sustainability, their developments in green spaces, and their programs to promote environmental education.

They reported that the jury members arrived in Nyíregyháza on Saturday and visited the city center’s public spaces, which have been renovated with climate adaptation in mind, the Sóstó Forest Park, and the ethnographic Museum Village, which showcases the region’s garden culture, traditional plants, and crops. They also visited the LEGO factory to see its green space solutions, which serve as an example of sustainable corporate operations worth following.

The professional delegation visited Varsány on Sunday, where its members particularly appreciated the preservation of Palóc traditions and the built and natural heritage. The jury also highlighted the primary school’s environmental education program and the conscious use of local agricultural products as remarkable achievements. The panel praised the regional greenway development connected to Lake Tábi as an important pillar of sustainable tourism, based on the report.

A total of 11 settlements from 7 countries are competing in this year’s competition. Nyíregyháza and Varsány won the right to compete internationally as former category winners of Virágos Magyarország (Flowery Hungary), Hungary’s oldest and most popular environmental competition.

Entente Florale Europe is one of Europe’s most prestigious landscape architecture and environmental beautification competitions. Its aim is to support livable and sustainable municipalities, with a focus on community cooperation.

Entente Florale Europe is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Hungary has participated in the international competition since 1990. To date, Hungary has won 13 gold and 33 silver awards for its outstanding floral displays and innovative green projects. Hungary will hold the presidency of the international organization until the end of 2025, providing a greater visibility on the international stage and provide an excellent opportunity for our experts and Hungarian communities to showcase themselves. The anniversary award ceremony will be held on September 27 in the Slovenian city of Velenje.
