U.S. Administration Follows Hungary’s Example in Family Policy, Says Foreign Minister

The United States considers Hungarian family policy to be exemplary, and the current administration is following Hungary’s example in the area of family policy measures, said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Wednesday in Washington.

The minister accepted an international honorary award on behalf of the Hungarian government at the ceremony commemorating the fifth anniversary of The Geneva Consensus Declaration on Promoting Women’s Health and Strengthening the Family, emphasizing that this was created by countries that pursue conservative family policies and have placed the protection of families at the center of their political and economic strategies.

He recalled that when former U.S. President Joe Biden took office, the United States quickly withdrew from this community, followed by Poland, after the change of government, when “woke, liberal ideology prevailed.”

“But we stayed, of course. We Hungarians maintained the operation of this organization, running it from Budapest. The American Republicans have always greatly appreciated this, and now that President Donald Trump has returned to the White House, they have quickly returned to this organization,” he said.

They speak openly about how they view Hungary and Hungarian family policy as an example in the implementation of the current U.S. administration’s family policy, and when they take family policy measures, they follow the Hungarian example, the example of Hungarian family policy,”

he continued.

Péter Szijjártó announced that, accordingly, the Hungarian government had received a very prestigious award for maintaining the operation of the alliance established to protect conservative, traditional family policy in recent years.

Today, we are receiving this international honorary award, and we continue to be justifiably proud that Hungarian family policy is seen as an example in the United States,”

he said.

He then pointed out that Hungary spends five percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on family support, which is the highest rate among the member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

He also emphasized that Hungarian regulations on tax exemptions for mothers are particularly well received in the United States. He explained that, under these regulations, mothers with at least three children are exempt from paying personal income tax for their entire lives, and that this will be extended to mothers with two children from 2026.

He also mentioned the Home Start Program, the baby-expecting loan available to young couples, the Worker Loan, and the partial or total forgiveness of student loan debt for young people who have multiple children.

As a result of all these measures, the fertility rate in Hungary has increased by 26 percent over the past twelve years, the number of marriages has risen the most in the European Union, while the number of divorces has fallen to a decades-long low, and the country ranks second in the EU in terms of female employment.

The minister emphasized that the Hungarian government’s primary goal is to strengthen the country, and to do so, families must first be strengthened.

He also warned that the family as an institution and concept is under fierce attack on the global political stage from the liberal mainstream, which is why it must be made clear that in Hungary, the family consists of a mother, a father, and children, where the mother is a woman and the father is a man.

He also established two main principles of Hungarian politics: that mothers are the foundation of families and must be helped to achieve harmony between family and career, private life and work; and that having children should not be allowed to put families at an economic disadvantage.

On Wednesday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó held talks with his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, focusing on the Budapest Peace Summit and bilateral cooperation.
