New information has come to light in the case of József Sebestyén, who died under controversial circumstances in Ukraine after allegedly being severely assaulted by recruitment officers. Based on reports from Transcarpathia (Ukraine), the victim was autopsied by a forensic expert who was pressured by the Ukrainian secret service because his son was threatened with conscription.
The Ukrainian army stated that Sebestyén’s death was caused by a pulmonary embolism, and no external signs of violence were found. However, Index reported that the expert investigating the case may be under the influence of the Ukrainian secret service in order to protect his son. His son was conscripted during a roadside check and only managed to leave the training camp due to his father’s intervention.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death are further complicated by a report in which Sebestyén’s last confession detailed how he was dragged into the woods, severely beaten, and blackmailed.
Several videos corroborate the atrocities, showing that the man was not only physically abused but also subjected to verbal abuse. In response to these events, Hungary summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to Budapest and initiated sanctions in Brussels, including against the head of the Carpathian Military District. In addition, three Ukrainian officials were banned from Hungarian territory.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reacted sharply to the measures, calling the Hungarian decision unfounded and absurd, and promised retaliatory measures.
At the same time, the Hungarian Government has pledged to support József Sebestyén’s family. State Secretary Lőrinc Nacsa announced that the deceased man’s university student son will receive financial assistance for his studies.
“Important decision. József Sebestyén’s son, who is a university student, will receive financial assistance for his studies. We will help the family,” he wrote.
