Ukrainian Threats Have Entered a New Phase, Minister Warns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

At Wednesday’s meeting, the government assessed the threats to Hungary from the Ukrainian side, which have entered a new phase, said Gergely Gulyás, Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office, at Thursday’s press briefing. He added that in recent times, new plans have been made public that predict interference in Hungarian domestic politics.

Gergely Gulyás said that a military leader honored by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is threatening to invade Hungary, while new plans are being made public that suggest interference in Hungarian domestic politics. He added that Politico had published a joint plan by Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the European Commission that violates Hungary’s interests in two ways. “The Zelenskyy plan affects Hungary in two ways: one is that Viktor Orbán should be removed from power and Tisza should be brought to power, while the other would abolish the requirement for unanimity on EU decisions.”

In this situation, Hungary remains convinced that it must stand on the side of peace, and we continue to consider the European Union’s efforts to prolong the war to be misguided,”

the minister said, adding that the response to these attempts at interference is to fill out the national petition.

Gulyás confirmed that the government remains convinced that peace efforts must be supported. They consider EU policies that contribute to prolonging the war to be misguided. “Hungary must continue to stand on the side of peace,” said the minister.

He also recalled that Hungary had done a lot for Ukraine following the Russian attack:

We provided humanitarian aid, took in refugees arriving in our country, and condemned the military action. However, this does not mean that the Hungarian government’s policy, which has emphasized the need for peacemaking from the outset, can be changed. The Hungarian people must decide on the policy of Hungary and the Hungarian government.”

When asked how seriously Ukraine’s threats should be taken, the minister said that every country should take threats seriously. “Their statements are hostile and unacceptable,” he emphasized.
