US Re-Accession to International Declaration a Potential Opportunity for Hungary

Following Donald Trump’s decision to rejoin the Geneva Consensus Declaration, there is a high chance that Hungary’s role will be expanded, Valerie Huber, one of the initiators of the international cooperation on family policy, said on Wednesday.

The president of the Washington-based Institute for Women’s Health stressed that without Hungary, the international coalition created by the document would no longer exist, as the secretariat moved to the Hungarian capital on the basis of a voluntary offer from the country with the departure of Brazil.

The family policy expert said it was very encouraging that four days after Donald Trump took office, the United States had decided to rejoin the group of signatories to the declaration. She added that

the decision was also an indication that US foreign policy would change greatly compared to the previous four years.

She recalled that Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the family policy declaration was taken after he took office.

Hungary’s Ambassador to the US, Szabolcs Takács, pointed out in a statement that the Hungarian side has been consistent in remaining part of the cooperation over the past four years. He added that President Donald Trump’s advisors and associates are aware that Budapest has adhered to the principles of the declaration and they appreciate this.

The Geneva Consensus Declaration was signed in autumn 2020 by 5 countries, including Hungary, at the initiative of the United States. Currently there are 40 signatories from all over the world. The document aims to expand women’s health and advancement opportunities and states that it is the sovereign right of every nation to ensure health, protect life and support families through national policy and legislative decisions.

The withdrawal of the United States as a signatory to the Partnership was announced by the US administration last Friday.
