USAID Head Orders the Termination of all Contracts in Hungary

US Director of the Office of Foreign Assistance Peter Marocco ordered the termination of all USAID (United States Agency for International Development) contracts in Hungary before receiving Hungarian Government Commissioner András László in Washington, reports The Atlantic. The meeting “reflects the convergence of interests between Budapest and Washington,” writes the article.

The acting head of USAID told congressional lawmakers Wednesday that his team was preparing potential criminal referrals against those who reportedly misused taxpayer dollars intended for foreign development programs, writes Fox News.

Members of Marocco’s staff think they have uncovered a pattern of illegal activity at the agency.

Peter Marocco has been tasked by President Donald Trump with dismantling USAID and told lawmakers he was investigating contracts and grants awarded by the agency. The United States Agency for International Development was among the first institutions that the Department of Government Efficiency (led by Elon Musk) targeted in the new Trump administration with the aim to root out wasteful spending.

Since then, it came to light that the USAID financed many NGOs and media outlets across the world in order to spread the democracy of the Biden administration. In Hungary, much money was awarded to actors opposing the Fidesz government.

Government commissioner András László wrote on his Facebook page about the meeting with Peter Marocco. He revealed that

Marocco has been given 90 days by President Donald Trump to complete a full USAID review, so all documents will be made public by April 20.

“I told him that the value of the disclosed interventions in Hungary over the past 4 years was at least $20.2 million to our knowledge, and that I want to get to the bottom of these interventions as soon as possible in preparation for next year’s elections so that we can take the necessary measures to protect Hungary’s sovereignty,” the politician emphasized.

He added that it was clear to the American side that political interference in an important ally country like Hungary is unworthy, must stop and must respect the will of the electorate. “The left-wing government, on the contrary, has built a global network of corruption and used it to spread globalist agendas, against the will of the electorate and public opinion. I have submitted a number of questions to him on the corruption cases in Hungary, which will be discussed again soon,” András László wrote.
