Veronika Major, gold medalist in both the individual and traditional team competitions, triumphed on Monday alongside Ákos Károly Nagy in the air pistol mixed team event at the European Shooting Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.
In this event, part of the Olympic program, 36 duos began the preliminary competition on Monday afternoon, with Major and Nagy advancing to the final of the top four duos with a score of 576.
In the final, Major and Nagy were joined by defending champions Sevval Ilayda Tarhan and Yusuf Dikec, the Turkish duo who won silver at the Olympics, as well as one Russian and one Austrian pair. The pairs had to shoot three series of five shots, followed by a knockout stage in which three shots were fired in succession, after which a pair in last place was eliminated from the competition. The shots were then scored to the nearest tenth of a point.
Major, an Olympic bronze medalist in air pistol shooting, is one of the most experienced members of the field.
On Sunday, she proved that she was in excellent form in the Armenian capital, where she won both the women’s individual and team air gun competitions.
The latter together with Sára Ráhel Fábián and Miriam Jákó. After such a track record, another good performance could be expected from her, but it was questionable what the inexperienced Ákos Károly Nagy, in his first year among the adults, would be capable of.
“I like the new format, in which four pairs compete for medals, and it is not the preliminary competition that decides who can shoot for the gold and who for the bronze.
We both competed confidently and managed to beat the Olympic silver medalists from Türkiye, that is a wonderful feeling, and after winning bronze in the World Cup, we have now won gold in the European Championships,”
Veronika Major told the Hungarian Shooting Federation.
Her partner, Ákos Károly Nagy, scored many 9.9s in the preliminary round, which only counted as nines, but he still finished with 96 points.
“I was a little surprised that we made it to the finals, but I was determined to give it my all. I did not want to deprive Veronika of her third gold medal, as she shot fantastically in both the preliminary round and the finals.
We are not stopping here; my long-term goal is to win medals in the individual competition as well,”
said Nagy.
Regarding the European Championship victory, Csaba Győrik, Veronika Major’s coach, told Nemzeti Sportrádió that she managed to carry her performance from Sunday’s final over to Monday. “Vera shot confidently in a strong field that included the Turkish Olympic silver medalists and the Austrian world champions,” he said, before highlighting the performance of junior Ákos Károly Nagy:
He quickly rose to the challenge and proved that he belongs alongside Vera. He was composed and shot tens when it really mattered.”
On Tuesday, both the men’s and women’s rifle trio competed for the bronze medal, but fell short, finishing in fourth place.
