Viktor Orbán and Romanian PM Hold First Official Talks in Bucharest

Viktor Orbán arrived at the Victoria Palace in Bucharest on Wednesday evening, where he held talks with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan over a working dinner. It was the first personal meeting between the prime ministers of Hungary and Romania since Bolojan’s appointment.
After the talks in Bucharest, the Prime Minister traveled to Băile Tușnad (Tusnádfürdő), where he will give a speech at the 34th Tusványos Summer University on Saturday. Viktor Orbán wrote in his Facebook post on Wednesday:
We have arrived in Bucharest, on Romanian soil. We will continue on to Transylvania tonight.”
Kelemen Hunor, president of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), was also present at the prime minister’s talks.
The government issued a press release regarding the meeting between the two prime ministers, stating: “The two officials discussed the development of Romanian-Hungarian relations, placing particular emphasis on concrete projects that can bring real benefits to the citizens of both countries, regardless of their ethnic affiliation. The Romanian prime minister emphasized that Romania wants to maintain a constructive relationship with Hungary based on genuine cooperation and tangible results.

The main topic of the talks was increasing trade between the two countries, which amounted to more than €13.3 billion in 2024, as well as developing joint infrastructure and transport projects.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also presented Romania’s main EU policy guidelines and emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of current challenges.
The talks focused on Romanian-Hungarian relations and the situation of the Hungarian minority in Romania, Kelemen Hunor said after the meeting. The RMDSZ president added: “The dialogue was open and constructive. It is gratifying to see that both prime ministers share similar views on the importance of cooperation based on mutual respect and that the security and appreciation of minorities is a shared responsibility. This can form a stable basis for the further development of relations between the two countries.”
