Viktor Orbán spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone, the Prime Minister’s Office Communications Department told MTI on Tuesday.
Viktor Orbán discussed the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as the availability of oil and natural gas supplies, which are crucial for Hungary’s energy security, with the Russian president.
The phone conversation also touched upon the situation of Hungarian citizens who were mobilized into the Ukrainian army and then taken prisoner by Russia, as well as a possible political and diplomatic settlement of the war in Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, Putin noted that Hungary’s leadership supports a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict and wishes to pursue a “balanced and sovereign course” in international affairs.
The politicians also discussed the situation in Iran and the rapidly escalating crisis in the Middle East, with particular regard to its possible impact on global energy markets. Based on the statement, the consequences of the Iranian conflict could also affect the state of the energy market. The parties agreed to continue their contacts at various levels.
Viktor Orbán previously stated that the Friendship oil pipeline had become more important due to the war in Iran and called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to resume oil deliveries to Hungary as soon as possible.
