In a speech in Szombathely (western Hungary), Viktor Orbán promised Vas County the construction of expressways worth several billion, while at the same time calling for a special development program for the border region.
The prime minister spoke in Szombathely about plans to develop the road network in the county in the southwest of the country. The head of government announced that construction of the M86 expressway would continue with a budget of HUF 279 billion (EUR 739.74 million, EUR 1 = HUF 377).
In addition, the M87 motorway will be built at a cost of HUF 190 billion, with its route also passing through the town of Bük. Furthermore, the construction of the section of the M76 road between Körmend and Zalaegerszeg is also being planned.

Particular emphasis was placed on the expansion of the western bypass of Szombathely which will cost HUF 25 billion. Viktor Orbán emphasized that significant results had been achieved in the region over the past 16 years in the field of road construction and renovation, including the construction of the M80. The head of government also addressed the special situation of Szombathely and the western Transdanubian border region.
According to the head of government, Szombathely is a special city because four capitals—Vienna, Bratislava, Zagreb, and Ljubljana—are closer to it than Budapest. This geographical location gives the city a special status.
Orbán emphasized that the border strip along the axis of Mosonmagyaróvár-Sopron-Szentandrás requires a special development program.
In his opinion, without targeted development measures, this region would fall out of the country’s economic cycle,
which would lead to disconnection rather than integration. The prime minister therefore expects the region’s representative – alluding to István Vámos – to draw up and present a concrete development plan. As he said, without such a plan, the region cannot realize its potential.

At the beginning of February, concrete progress was made on the M86–M87 expressways: the National Concession Agency launched a conditional tender for the expansion and long-term operation of the expressways.
The large-scale project includes the construction of new sections, the renovation of existing roads, and the complex expansion of infrastructure.
The section of the M87 expressway between Szombathely and Kőszeg can be realized by connecting it to the M86. According to earlier plans, the 16.3-kilometer section to the national border is to be completed by the end of 2030. The project also includes the renovation of 15.8 kilometers of secondary roads and the construction of several kilometers of new roads. A two-lane carriageway is planned for this section of the M87.
Another spectacular part of the project is the construction of the missing section of the bypass north of Szombathely.
Over a length of eight and a half kilometers, highways 87 and 89 will be connected by a new route, and at the intersection of highways 86, 87, and 89, the road will provide a direct connection between the existing M86 expressway and the M87 expressway currently under construction.
