The Russian-Ukrainian war and all issues related to economic, military, and energy cooperation between Hungary and the United States will also be on the agenda, including the use of Russian energy sources, the Prime Minister’s political director said on Kossuth Radio’s program, discussing the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.
Balázs Orbán explained that the United States is acting as a neutral external player in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and is working to bring it to a closure. The Americans are “carrying out a very complex series of diplomatic maneuvers,” one possible element of which is the planned Peace Summit in Budapest, as well as putting pressure on both sides of the conflict.
“The use of Russian energy is not an ideological issue for us, but a reality,” because Hungary has no access to the sea, and the capacity of the pipelines coming from the sea is insufficient.
The Americans are well aware of the Hungarian situation, so the timing is excellent for the leaders of the two countries to discuss this directly in Washington on November 7, he noted.
He added that we hope “to conclude a very successful series of negotiations and to report good news in the areas of economic, military, other technological, and energy cooperation.”
The politician recalled that the Biden administration did everything it could to “lay a political minefield in the middle of Hungarian-American cooperation,” but after Trump took office, they began to clear this minefield. One such issue is the double taxation agreement, which was terminated with us, but “we hope that we will be able to remove this element of the minefield that the liberals planted to restrict cooperation.”
Balázs Orbán also said that Hungary would be very pleased if the United States were to become a more active investor, as the country is seeking strategic cooperation with the world’s major power centers. “We are waiting for large investors from these countries who will bring technology, create jobs, and contribute to increased productivity and wage levels in the country.”
Regarding the plan for a Russian-American Peace Summit, he explained: the leaders of the two great powers are working on a very complex agreement, which not only concerns the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war and related geopolitical issues, but also the Earth’s energy supply, the functioning of the global economy, access to rare earth metals, and Russian-American business cooperation.
If there is an opportunity for Hungary to help in any way, we will do so, and if the negotiations reach a level where it is worthwhile for the two leaders to meet again, Budapest will welcome them with open arms,”
Balázs Orbán noted.
He recalled that Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, and they decided to take very serious steps toward cooperation rather than a trade war. Hungary maintains good and fair relations with all major powers and is trying to persuade the European Union, or at least some major European countries, to participate in discussions on major global political issues.
“If the European Union closes itself off on the one hand and gets involved in trade wars with anyone who opposes it, then I have to ask how will there be growth, how will the middle class be strengthened, how will wages rise, how will the number of jobs be maintained? Otherwise, we will be facing very serious structural economic problems in Europe,” concluded Balázs Orbán.
