Talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán officially began in Moscow on Friday, focusing on securing Hungary’s energy supply and addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Before leaving for Moscow, Viktor Orbán said the main goal of the talks with Vladimir Putin is to secure Hungary’s energy supply and ensure continued oil and gas deliveries via Russian pipelines.

Today, we are traveling to meet President Putin to ensure Hungary’s energy supply. Hungary’s oil & gas arrive through pipelines from Russia, making these deliveries the key point of our energy security,”

PM Viktor Orbán wrote on X.

He added:  “We recently traveled to Washington to secure Hungary’s exemption from the American sanctions on Russian energy: we succeeded. Now we must take the next step, guaranteeing that deliveries to Hungary continue without interruption. This is why I am going to Russia today: to make sure Hungary’s energy supply remains secure and affordable this winter and in the year ahead. Let us get to work!”

Based on first reports, trade, energy cooperation and the prospects for a ceasefire dominated the agenda.

“PM Viktor Orbán in Moscow: Hungary’s energy security now and in the future is based on Russian oil and gas — the prime minister said at the Kremlin during talks with President Putin. PM Orbán praised the stability of Russian energy supplies, reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to a sovereign foreign policy, and said Budapest is ready to host peace talks aimed at ending the Ukraine war,” wrote Zoltán Kovács, State Secretary for International Communication on X.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, who held talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, before the negotiations. He wrote in a Facebook post: “We have been on the side of peace for almost four years now, and the path to peace leads through negotiations and diplomacy. Closing diplomatic channels means giving up hope for peace. “
