Viktor Orbán Wonders Whose Pockets in Hungary the Ukrainian Cash Is Ending Up In

“We want to know what the Ukrainians are doing with this huge amount of money in Hungary,” Viktor Orbán said on Saturday at an election campaign event in Debrecen (eastern Hungary), where the audience also asked the Hungarian prime minister about the Ukrainian gold and money transport.

Viktor Orbán brought a new aspect to the interpretation of events. In his opinion, the many pro-Ukrainian voices in Hungary are only partly sincere and heartfelt, while the other part “comes from the pocket.”

I too would like to know how this money ends up in these pockets,”

he made clear. Viktor Orbán said that they, too, only had questions about this case, as they did not know whether this money had been “taken somewhere” or “brought here.” The head of government assessed the events as suspicious and pointed out that Hungarians have a clear opinion about all neighboring peoples and that he could guess what Hungarians think about Ukrainians.

In contrast, he sees that in Hungary there is a pro-Ukrainian party that has emerged out of nowhere, is making progress, is functioning, and has no financial difficulties, and that there are many pro-Ukrainian media representatives and public figures.

“I think that if I know my own country correctly, this proportion is greater than in the country,” Viktor Orbán said. He also explained that Ukrainians must understand that “you can not fool us” and that it is absolutely impossible for them to impose an oil blockade on Hungary and for us to stand idly by.

Another questioner also asked Viktor Orbán about the whereabouts of the confiscated funds from the Ukrainian gold transport. He wondered whether this amount could be used for Hungarian investments.

The Prime Minister began his response by saying that the fate of this confiscated money would be dealt with as soon as it was known what it was. “Until then, it will remain here!” interjected János Lázár, Minister of Construction and Transport, who was present at the event. “It is lying there, yes,” confirmed Viktor Orbán.

This means that the large amount of money and gold transported by the Ukrainian shipment will not be returned to Ukraine for the time being — even if President Zelenskyy does not like it — as its origin and intended use are unknown.

Once these questions have been answered credibly, this item will be placed on the agenda. The seven Ukrainian citizens, including a former intelligence general, who accompanied the gold and money transport, arrived in Ukraine on Friday evening, where they were handed over to the Ukrainians by the Hungarian side at the Záhony border crossing.
