We Cannot Ignore Our Geographical Reality in Energy Security, Says Foreign Minister

“We fully support the US president’s efforts to promote peace, but we cannot change the reality of our geographical situation,” Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

The minister reflected on an article published on Index on Tuesday, based on which Donald Trump spoke about ending Hungary’s energy dependence on Russia at the Ukrainian-American summit held during the UN General Assembly.

According to the article, the US president told his Ukrainian counterpart that he would talk to his friend, PM Viktor Orbán, to which Zelenskyy responded that, in his opinion, Hungarians are not yet ready to stop buying Russian gas.

At the same time, Donald Trump spoke appreciatively of Ukraine’s struggle, emphasizing that the country has been holding back the Russian army for three and a half years, while many believed the war would end in a matter of days. He added that Russia’s economy is now “in terrible shape” and collapsing.

Zelenskyy reported that the Ukrainian army had recaptured 360 square kilometers of territory in the past month and taken a thousand Russian soldiers prisoner, whom they intend to use for exchange.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, by referring to Hungary’s “geographical reality” in the context of energy security, emphasized the country’s landlocked position in Central Europe, which deprives it of direct access to seaports and significantly limits its options to diversify energy imports.
