Wisent Tow Trucks Reach Veszprém to Aid Amid Historic Snow in Hungary

Wisent military tow trucks arrived in Veszprém Thursday to assist stranded vehicles amid Hungary’s historic snowfall, as extreme cold warnings forecast temperatures below –20°C in some areas.

The tow trucks left Tata (northwestern Hungary) on Wednesday, arrived in the Veszprém (western Hungary) area early Thursday morning, the Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky announced on his Facebook page.

He wrote that on the way, in the Vérteskethely area (northwestern Hungary, not far from Tata), soldiers worked with firefighters to rescue a truck in distress.

In a video posted on his page, the Minister asked the soldiers reporting to him to take care of each other and the equipment.

The harsh weather conditions continue in the majority of the country. Extreme cold is expected over the weekend in several parts of Hungary: temperatures may drop below minus 15 degrees Celsius over large areas, and in some places it may become colder than minus 20 degrees, meteorological service HungaroMet reported. Weather warnings have been issued for several counties – the second-level (orange) warning for extreme cold has not been issued for almost five years, most recently in February 2021.
