Wizz Air and Airbus jointly Test Sustainable Aviation Fuel on Budapest Routes

Wizz Air and Airbus are jointly testing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on the Barcelona-Budapest and Brussels-Budapest routes, writes Turizmus.com.

Sustainable aviation fuel is made from sustainable resources that can be mixed with fossil jet fuel to reduce emissions. SAF is an alternative fuel derived from a variety of feedstocks (raw material required for industrial processes), such as used cooking oil, that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65% compared to conventional aviation fuel, according to the International Air Transport Association.

The tests will start on the Barcelona-Budapest and Brussels-Budapest routes

and the fuel will be supplied by Cepsa and distributed by World Fuel Services (World Kinect Corporation) to the airports concerned by the end of the year.

According to Yvonne Moynihan, Wizz Air’s , the cross-industry collaboration demonstrates the aviation community’s commitment to reducing their emissions intensity. Wizz Air’s target is to operate 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030. She added that this project will also collect information from their passengers on their awareness of decarbonizing aviation.

Julie Kitcher, Chief Sustainability Officer and Communications at Airbus, noted that fuel-efficient aircraft and SAF will provide the bulk of the emissions reductions in their industry by 2050, which is why it is so important to effectively integrate SAF into airline operations.

Duncan Storey, Senior Vice President, supply and commercial development EMEA, World Fuel, stressed that the alignment with the new ReFuelEU Aviation requirements is an important milestone to expand the availability of sustainable fuels.

The European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which will apply from 2025,

aims to ensure that sustainable aviation fuel is always available at all airports in the EU and that its use blended with conventional fuel is steadily increased.

The successful implementation of ReFuelEU Aviation requires the collaboration of all parties in the supply chain, in particular aviation fuel suppliers, EU airports and airlines. More than 95% of air transport departing from EU airports will be covered by this new Regulation.

With this project, Wizz Air will start using SAF in its daily operations earlier than the EU deadline.
