Wizz Air has broken its own passenger traffic record again in 2024, carrying almost 63 million passengers on around 300,000 flights. In addition, the number of flights increased by 23 percent compared to 2023, the airline told MTI on Thursday.
In 2024, 6.4 million passengers travelled from Hungary with Wizz Air, a 23 percent increase compared to 2023. The Hungarian airline carried a total of 62.8 million passengers last year.
Wizz Air launched nearly 100 new routes in 2024, with Genoa, Gran Canaria, Salerno, Memmingen and Marrakesh among the new destinations available from Budapest.
The airline has added 34 new aircraft to its fleet, an increase of 15 percent. Of Wizz Air’s 226 aircraft, 146 are state-of-the-art Airbus A320/321neo aircraft, which have the best sustainability performance in their class. These aircraft account for 65 percent of their flights, they said.
Wizz Air expects to receive 50 new Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft this year and early 2026.
With these, the share of new generation aircraft in the total fleet will exceed 77 percent as the airline phases out older Airbus A320ceo aircraft. With this move, Wizz Air will also improve its fuel efficiency and confirm its leadership as the most sustainable airline in Europe.
In 2024, Wizz Air has further improved its scheduled departures and arrivals and has become the second most punctual low-cost airline in Europe. In addition, it operated 99.5 percent of its scheduled flights last year, the third best result among European airlines and significantly above the industry average. In Hungary, the rate was even higher, at 99.6 percent.
To enhance the customer experience, the airline has tripled its customer service capacity, introduced Amelia, a 24-hour virtual assistant to assist in the event of cancellations or delays, and launched a new customer center on their website.
Wizz Air continues to maintain its market leadership in Hungary, with flights from Budapest to 71 airports in 32 countries, making the Hungarian capital with the most destinations by the end of 2024.
