Wizz Air Expands European Routes with Return to Transylvania

Budapest-headquartered Wizz Air is reopening its base in Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely, Romania), a cultural center in the heart of the Hungarian minority area, and will launch flights to nine new destinations from March.

A modern Airbus A320neo aircraft will be deployed to the Transylvanian city, bringing the number of Wizz Air aircraft operating from Romanian bases in winter to 39, the low-cost carrier announced at a press conference held at Transilvania International Airport in Târgu Mureș on Monday.

From March 29, 2026, passengers from Târgu Mureș – in addition to the existing daily flight to Budapest – will be able to fly with Wizz Air to Brussels Charleroi (Belgium), Larnaca (Cyprus), Paris Beauvais (France), Dortmund and Memmingen (Germany), Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino (Italy), as well as Basel (Switzerland) and London Luton (United Kingdom).

The airline will operate two to three flights a week from Târgu Mureș to the new destinations.

András Radó, Wizz Air’s corporate communications director, recalled at the press conference that in 2006, Târgu Mureș was the first Romanian airport from which Wizz Air launched flights. He added that almost two decades later, they are returning with renewed commitment, as Romania remains a key market for them, where they are constantly expanding their network.

András Peti, director of Transilvania International Airport, operated by the Mureș County Council, said that they have recently accelerated their technological modernization: they have installed new control systems, optimized passenger flow, and begun expanding the parking lot. Currently, there is space for approximately 180 cars.

Attila Zoltán Csibi, vice president of the Mureș County Council and host of the event, who has been coordinating negotiations with the company for months, expressed his hope that Wizz Air’s announcement marks the beginning of a new era for the region. He believes that the airport in Târgu Mureș is entering a phase of growth that will strengthen the community, the economy, and tourism, opening up unprecedented opportunities for the region in the coming years.

At the same time, the budget airline also announced a new service to Budapest: after Istanbul and Antalya, Wizz Air will launch a third direct flight from Liszt Ferenc International Airport to Türkiye.

Ankara, the Turkish capital, is included in the discount airline’s offer for the first time.

Subject to regulatory approval, the first flight will depart from Budapest to Ankara on April 29, 2026, and will operate three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, writes a statement from Wizz Air.

On Monday morning, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, announced that an amendment to the air traffic agreement would be signed,

thanks to which 105 flights per week will connect Budapest with Türkiye’s largest cities, including Wizz Air’s Budapest-Ankara route.

“Currently, there are 42 flights between the two countries each week. Under the agreement signed today, this number will increase to 105. From now on, there will be 105 flights between the two countries: 91 passenger flights and 14 cargo flights per week,” he said, welcoming the launch of Wizz Air’s flight between Budapest and Ankara.
