Wizz Air has become the world’s first low-cost airline to put into service Airbus’ latest long-haul aircraft, the A321XLR. The new-generation aircraft will allow passengers to reach intercontinental destinations at affordable prices that were previously only available on more expensive, larger aircraft, Index reports, citing a statement from the Budapest-based low-cost carrier.
According to the airline’s announcement on Tuesday, the A321XLR – that was taken delivery of at Airbus’ Hamburg headquarters – is a milestone in the history of low-cost air travel. The aircraft is unique in its ability to operate flights of up to six hours, while its fuel burn and carbon emissions are lower than those of its class.
Owain Jones, Wizz Air’s Deputy CEO, said
the new aircraft would “revolutionize air travel,” allowing them to offer non-stop intercontinental flights at unbeatable prices.
The aircraft, which can also be fueled by sustainable resources, can fly up to 8,700 kilometers, while consuming 30% less fuel and emitting less noise than previous competitor aircraft, Wizz Air’s statement reads.
The company is looking to expand its capacity to connect Europe and the Middle East with the A321XLRs, of which a total of 47 have been ordered from the aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
Wizz Air plans to put a total of six of the aircraft into service this year.
The first aircraft will soon be deployed to exciting new destinations, with details to be announced in the near future.
According to earlier announcements, the older aircraft will be phased out and the new ones arriving by 2026 will increase the proportion of modern aircraft to 77%, making Wizz Air the most sustainable airline in Europe.
In 2024, Wizz Air broke its own traffic record by carrying 63 million passengers on almost 300,000 flights, including 6.4 million from Hungary. Both the number of flights and domestic passengers increased by almost a third compared to the previous year.
