Wizz Air Soars: Record Summer Traffic and Major Tel Aviv Expansion

Wizz Air carried 6.265 million passengers in September, an increase of 8.8 percent compared to the same period last year, Világgazdaság reported.

The expected annual passenger volume is 75 million, of which 8 million will be in Hungary, while the airline’s capacity utilization is approaching 93 percent. Shares rose 2.5 percent on the news, and the company carried 24.5 million passengers across its entire network during the summer, a 10 percent increase.

Wizz Air’s environmental indicators are also improving: in September, it emitted 49.8 grams of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometer, which remained below 50 grams for the second month in a row thanks to the use of A321neo aircraft and higher load factors. By comparison, Ryanair’s figure is 65 grams, while Lufthansa’s is 87.5 grams per passenger kilometer.

In response to the winter schedule, the airline is expanding its Tel Aviv flights, offering more than one million seats on 18 direct routes from Israel, a 240 percent increase over the previous year. Destinations include Budapest, Bucharest, Rome, Milan, Athens, London, Vienna, Warsaw, Krakow, and several cities in Cyprus and Bulgaria.

Wizz Air is also optimizing its network: it is closing its Vienna base and relocating its aircraft to a new base in Bratislava, Slovakia, while also redeploying aircraft to other parts of the network. The management’s goal is to take advantage of lower-cost airport options and ensure sustainable growth.

The airline’s success clearly shows that the Hungarian discount carrier is able to respond quickly to market opportunities, increase its capacity, and make its operations more sustainable compared to its competitors.
