World-class Talent Program Launched with Nobel Prize-Winners’ Leadership

The board of trustees of the Élvonal (‘Forefront’) Research Excellence and Talent Development Foundation, led by several Nobel Prize-winning researchers, held its inaugural meeting. At the same time, the governing body of the renewed Hungarian Research Network, HUN-REN, also began its work, Magyar Nemzet reports.

“November 24 has become Hungarian Science Day of the 21st century, as today the Élvonal Foundation, led by four Nobel Prize-winning researchers and an Abel Prize-winning mathematician, and the governing body of the renewed Hungarian Research Network are holding their inaugural meetings,” said the Minister of Culture and Innovation.

Balázs Hankó added that the Élvonal Foundation is calling home the most outstanding researchers in the life and non-life sciences, seeking to bring international researchers to Hungary and striving to nurture young talent.

He recalled that “thanks to Ferenc Krausz, Katalin Karikó, Nobel Prize-winning author László Krasznahorkai, and other outstanding scientists,

Hungary ranks 11th among the countries of the world in terms of the number of Nobel Prize winners per million inhabitants, and even higher, in 6th place in terms of research talent, while maintaining a stable 5th place in terms of physics and mathematics student Olympiads.”

“With its existing foundations, Hungary will be one of the ten most innovative countries in Europe by 2030,” Balázs Hankó emphasized.

According to Balázs Gulyás, president of HUN-REN, Monday marked another significant milestone in the renewal of the network. He described the inaugural meeting of the organization’s supreme strategic governing body as an event of paramount importance, that is one of the highlights in the history of Hungarian science.

The renewal of HUN-REN is a paradigm shift and strategic change affecting the entire Hungarian scientific world, emphasized the president.

HUN-REN’s mission is to be the flagship for the creation of new scientific and innovation results, thereby contributing to solving the social, economic, and environmental challenges facing the Hungarian economy and the nation.”

The president pointed out that research must be of world-class quality, but its results and innovations must contribute to the development of the economy and society.

Balázs Gulyás emphasized that the members of the governing body are internationally recognized representatives of the scientific community, as well as leaders of top companies and international financial organizations, that guarantees impartiality and a high level of professionalism.

Ferenc Krausz, Nobel Prize-winning physicist and chairman of the board of trustees of the Élvonal Foundation, indicated that the organization’s goal is to build a scientific environment where breakthroughs can occur. The most important prerequisites for this are long-term predictability, reliability, and a stable institutional background.

Élvonal is not simply an institution, but marks the beginning of a new era with a stable background, a clear mission, and a world-class research environment that is capable of retaining and attracting talent in the long term,”

emphasized the Nobel Prize-winning researcher.

The foundation has three pillars: cutting-edge research, talent development, and social utilization. The goal is to turn the knowledge gained from research into real value and benefit for Hungary. According to Ferenc Krausz, stable, predictable funding is essential for this.

“Hungary has always been strong in talent,” he said. He emphasized that the benchmark is world class, and the goal is to make discoveries that are worthy of a Nobel Prize.

The Élvonal Foundation uniquely combines talent development with cutting-edge research. They are building a mentoring network that connects with students in high school, motivates them, and shows them that Hungary also offers very good prospects for scientific research.

We do not discourage our young people from going abroad; on the contrary, we encourage them to go and gain valuable experience, but we also show them that there will be a way back home and opportunities to be successful,”

concluded Ferenc Krausz.
