Hungarian-Japanese economic relations should be further deepened, Minister for National Economy Márton Nagy emphasized. During his official visit to Tokyo, he held bilateral talks with the heads of globally leading Japanese companies such as Suzuki, Hitachi, JBIC Bank and Nippon Paper, and took part in the opening of the Hungarian pavilion at the Osaka World Expo.
Discussions focused on expanding and deepening economic relations, with a particular focus on further strengthening trade and industrial cooperation. It was recalled that
Japan has been one of Hungary’s most important economic partners for decades, with more than 180 Japanese companies operating in the country, providing livelihoods for 27,000 families and contributing significantly to the performance and growth of the economy.
Japanese companies are particularly important players in the automotive and electronics sectors, with investors continuing to show interest and constantly looking for new opportunities to deepen economic relations between the two countries.
During the bilateral talks, the Minister for National Economy held talks with Mr. Toshihiro Suzuki, Chairman and CEO of Suzuki. The company is the 12th largest car manufacturer in the world and a major player in the global electric vehicle market.
The fact that Suzuki operates its only European production base in Hungary is a key factor for our country,
Mr Nagy underlined. At the meeting, he stressed that Hungary is interested in a strong and growing electric vehicle ecosystem, so further expansion of cooperation is key.
The Minister also held talks with Hitachi executives to explore opportunities to participate in railway development projects, and with Nippon Paper representatives to strengthen business relations in the organic chemicals market. He also met with representatives of JBIC Bank, with whom he reviewed the state of financial relations and possible cooperation opportunities.

On Sunday, the Hungarian Pavilion at the Osaka World Expo opened. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Márton Nagy said the event is one of the world’s largest cultural, tourism and economic impact events, as well as an unparalleled diplomatic and economic development opportunity. He added that
the World Expo is an extraordinary forum for nations to showcase their culture, economic strength, innovation and vision.
Thus, the fact that Hungary will have a national pavilion this year, alongside almost 160 other countries, is of great national economic importance, as more than 28 million visitors are expected during the nearly 6 months of the expo, he added. Márton Nagy recalled that Hungary was among the first countries to obtain the necessary permits to participate in the World Expo, and the Hungarian Pavilion was one of the first to be completed in less than a year. This exceptional achievement is due to the coordinated, high quality professional work of the Hungarian and Japanese contractors, he highlighted.

Márton Nagy emphasized that
the fact that the first visit of the Japanese Minister in charge of the expo was to the Hungarian Pavilion on the opening day was a tribute to the whole country and to the pavilion.
The Hungarian presence could also give a new boost to tourism, which accounts for almost 13% of gross domestic product (GDP) and set a record last year, with more than 18 million visitors spending 44 million nights in Hungary and annual traffic at Budapest airport exceeding 17.6 million. The pavilion aims to stimulate the desire to travel, as the East Asian region is one of the fastest growing tourism markets for Hungary. China, South Korea and Japan are the most prominent markets for Hungary in the region. According to the National Tourism Data Supply Centre, China doubled its tourist arrivals, South Korea increased by 8% and Japan by 44% last year compared to the previous year.
Márton Nagy emphasized that the Hungarian Pavilion is a gateway to Hungary. A defining feature is the more than 35,000 textile cells that cover the façade, which evokes the movement of leaves and creates a natural experience, perfectly reflecting the creative thinking and technological sophistication of which the nation has always been proud. Gábor Zoboki, the architect behind the concept of the Hungarian Pavilion, said that
the main theme of the exhibition is to understand and design the society of the future. As a result, natural building materials dominated the design of the facility.
The central part of the three-store pavilion is the Dome, which houses the theater space, he explained.

During the six months of the exhibition, 21 folk singers will perform and teach Hungarian folk songs to the audience in 15-minute rotations. The gastronomic offerings will also follow the same concept, with the pavilion’s dishes based on the ingredients of the Hungarian countryside, peasant culture and national traditions, including goulash soup, Hortobágyi pancakes (savoury Hungarian crêpe dish, filled with meat), paprika potatoes, cottage cheese dumplings and Somlói trifle.

Next to the restaurant, there will also be a wine bar, where the best wines of the Hungarian regions will be available; you can also taste ‘fröccs’ (spritzer, a Hungarian speciality with wine) or several types of homemade syrups. The mascot of the Hungarian section, Miska, is inspired by a typical folk ornament, the miska jug, symbolizing Hungarian hospitality and the importance of community.
