World stars, representatives of Hungarian jazz dynasties, outstanding Hungarian jazz educators, and emerging young talents will perform for the Romanian capital’s audience at the 6th Bucharest Hungarian Jazz Days between October 7-11, the Liszt Institute’s Bucharest center announced on Tuesday.
András László Kósa, director of the Hungarian cultural institute in Bucharest, told MTI that the event, launched in 2019, is now an integral part of the Bucharest jazz scene. Jazz musicians, university students, music critics, and the public are looking forward to the annual Hungarian jazz debut in Bucharest,
the only music festival in the Romanian capital that presents a comprehensive overview of the jazz scene in another country,
he added.
On Monday, the opening day of this year’s series of events, which will take place in four different venues, will see two outstanding figures of the international jazz scene, guitarist Ferenc Snétberger and saxophonist Tony Lakatos, soloist of the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, performing at the George Enescu Hall of the National Music University in Bucharest.
On Tuesday, the audience is invited to the concert hall of the Liszt Institute for a concert by János Egri Jr. who will perform with his father, one of the most prominent and sought-after bassists of the Hungarian jazz scene, as well as with one of the most talented jazz drummers, András Lakatos Pecek.
On Wednesday, two brothers, Krisztián Oláh and Kálmán Oláh Jr., who have followed in the footsteps of their father, world-famous jazz pianist Kálmán Oláh., will perform at the JazzBook club in Bucharest.
Both musicians have their own quartets and perform in several other ensembles, but they also occasionally perform as a duo, as they will do this time at the 6th Bucharest Hungarian Jazz Days.
On Friday, the last concert of the 6th Hungarian Jazz Days will take place at the Green Hours Jazz Café, where the band Symbiosis5, formed in 2020, and soon to be internationally renowned, will perform. The group won the Sibiu Jazz International Competition in 2022, and both main prizes at the Jazz Showcase organized by Müpa Budapest in 2023.
Symbiosis5 will be in Bucharest as part of a three-stop concert series in Romania, with a concert in Sibiu the day before and Oradea the day after.
András László Kósa pointed out that it has become a tradition that the Hungarian cultural center, in the framework of the Hungarian Jazz Days in Bucharest, together with the National University of Music Bucharest, organizes a master class for university students and music high school students, also open to non-professionals interested in jazz, giving them an insight into the secrets of improvisational music. This year’s masterclass will be given by jazz pianist and composer Krisztián Oláh, piano teacher at the jazz department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, on October 9.
