Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his hope that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán would stop blocking the final approval of the €90 billion loan within the European Union. The head of state made this statement on Thursday in Kyiv at a press conference held after a working meeting with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and members of the government.
“We hope that one person in the European Union will not block the €90 billion, or the first installment of that €90 billion, and that Ukrainian soldiers will have weapons. Otherwise, we will give this person’s address to the armed forces, to our guys, so they can call him and talk to him in his own language,” Zelenskyy said.
When asked whether there were risks that EU financial support for Ukraine could weaken due to the Iranian conflict and increased European spending, Svyrydenko replied: “As far as the Ukraine Facility or other European programs are concerned, we have not received any signals from our European partners in this regard. Our task is to adopt the legislation necessary to receive the funding.”
According to Zelenskyy, the question of the €90 billion loan will have to be resolved at the next meeting of EU leaders, scheduled for March 19-20.
It is beyond every limit that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has practically issued a death threat against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, but Hungary cannot be blackmailed, no matter how threatening the rhetoric,”
said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Thursday in Sopron.
Surprisingly, Zelenskyy’s threat was also unequivocally rejected by opposition leader Péter Magyar, whose party accuses Viktor Orbán of exaggerating and exploiting the threat of war and defends the Ukrainian narrative. “No foreign head of state may threaten a Hungarian citizen!” said the TISZA party’s leading candidate. He emphasized that Hungary is a free country and that its citizens and government will not allow themselves to be threatened by other countries. Hungary’s energy supply is a matter of national importance that transcends party politics and election campaigns.
I expect the leadership of the European Union to sever all ties with Ukraine until President Zelenskyy clarifies his words and apologizes to Hungary for his remarks,”
the opposition party leader said in his statement.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s behavior as “unacceptable” and also called on Brussels leaders to distance themselves from the Ukrainian president’s threatening words against Viktor Orbán.
