Why Jennifer Aniston’s Ex-Husband’s Controversial Etiquette Is Raising Eyebrows
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Jennifer Aniston’s ex-husband Justin Theroux is turning heads not just on screen, but in the skies.
On Wednesday, September 4, the 53-year-old Hollywood star shared on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon a rumor that’s raising eyebrows: his alleged habit of getting nude on planes.
“I was going to ask you this backstage, but I’ll do it right here in front of America. Do you sleep naked on international flights?” Jimmy Fallon asked, point blank, prompting Theroux — who was married to Aniston, 55, from 2015 to 2018 — to set the record straight.
“So you’re in the public eye sometimes and, you know, you get questions from a tabloid or something that says, ‘Can you confirm or deny X, Y?'” the White Lotus actor explained. “You go, ‘Oh yeah, no, that’s not true.’ It’s usually pretty silly — I got one that was that I was a nudist on airplanes… That I like, would get on airplanes naked and walk around them.”
Without skipping a beat, Fallon, 49, chimed in: “I’ve read this!” Theroux nodded his head. “Yes, you see? Fake news,” he said, adding, “So I thought it’d be kind of fun to reply, ‘Yes, I am a nudist on planes.’ Like this could be hilarious.”
Theroux then went on to elaborate how he and his pals brainstorm cheeky responses to throw off the press. “I was running some ideas, like reply ideas with my friends. I was thinking, ‘Wouldn’t this be funny? Like, what could we say?’ We could say, ‘Yeah, I insist on being naked because X, Y, Z,'” he smirked.
The conversation took an unexpected turn when the movie icon recounted a particularly memorable exchange with actor Jason Bateman, which inadvertently fueled the nudist rumor. “And then I was telling Jason Bateman, our friend, this thing and he goes, ‘Yeah, but dude, you do fly naked on planes.’ And I was like, ‘What? What are you talking about?'” the Leftovers alum explained.
“He was like, ‘Yeah, when we flew to London — we took a flight once to London together — and he was like, ‘I came by to say goodnight to you and you were totally naked!'” Theroux recalled. “I wasn’t naked, I was in my boxer shorts!” he clarified, to which Bateman, 55, responded, “Yeah, so clearly someone saw you and thought that you were naked. So that’s the origin of the story.”
While Theroux might enjoy lounging in his underwear high above the clouds, his recent public appearance was anything but casual. On Wednesday, August 28, he was dressed to the nines on the red carpet at the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice next to his fiancée, Nicole Brydon Bloom.
