Final Verdict for the Minority Safepack Initiative Delivered

MEP Loránt Vincze

The Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected the final appeal on the Minority SafePack initiative, reported Loránt Vincze, Member of the European Parliament, President of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) and Chair of the Minority Intergroup in the European Parliament.

He called the decision another disappointment for the protection of national minorities at the European level,  and outlined that the issue of ethnic minorities remains low on the EU’s agenda.

A clear message: minority protection is still not a priority for the EU,”

Loránt Vincze wrote in response to the decision. He added: “though the result is disappointing, our work continues.”

The Minority SafePack citizens’ initiative was supported by over one million European citizens and was backed by several member-states and political parties. Nevertheless, in 2021, the European Commission decided not to take legislative action on the matter. The initiators then took the matter to court, but the current court ruling brings this process to an end – the Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected all of the plaintiffs’ arguments.

The Hungarian politician from Romania expressed his special thanks to all those who helped the Minority SafePack with their signatures, campaign work, or political support: “ We thank all our supporters for standing with us!”

Fact

The Minority SafePack was a European citizens’ initiative that aimed to get the EU to take measures to protect the linguistic and cultural rights of national minorities. The package included support for minority languages, the promotion of cultural autonomy, and the strengthening of educational rights. The initiative was coordinated by FUEN and received significant support in several Central and Eastern European countries, including Hungary and Romania.
