Cardinals Unlikely To Trade Nolan Arenado In Shocking Move, Per Insider

The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly been looking to shop third baseman Nolan Arenado this winter. But due to Arenado’s no-trade clause, he can choose the team he lands with. The star third baseman has reportedly given the green light for a trade to the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.
No trade has come very close to being finalized yet, and the Cardinals are likely losing hope that a deal will ever come to fruition.
FanSided’s MLB insider, Robert Murray, recently revealed the Cardinals will likely be stuck holding onto Arenado for the 2025 season. While things may continue to change and develop, the trade market for the infield doesn’t look good.

“Holding onto Arenado, while predictable, is an organizational failure by the Cardinals,” Murray wrote. “In announcing their intention to trade Arenado, they made what was an already bad situation even more awkward. To Arenado’s credit, he’s handled the situation with class and grace and made it clear he’s prepared to play in St. Louis.
“But in trading Arenado, the Cardinals wanted to shed salary and play young players in hopes of resetting for the future. But Arenado’s future, at least in 2025, appears to be in St. Louis — and further delays a reset with the Cardinals that should have happened long ago.”
Obviously, things can still change. There’s potential that one of the six teams that Arenado would clear a trade to could suffer an injury. If one of those teams’ starting third baseman goes down, the Cardinals will likely be the team to call.
There’s also a chance that Arenado widens his list of teams he’d be willing to go to. If he signs off on a deal to the New York Yankees or a few other teams, a deal could come to fruition quite quickly.
As things sit right now, Arenado will play the 2025 season with the Cardinals.
