Government Urges EU to Strike Tariff Deal with U.S. within Two Weeks

“The Hungarian Government expects the European Commission to reach an agreement with the United States within the next two weeks, thereby avoiding the planned 30 percent punitive tariffs,” said Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Monday in Brussels.

Following the European Union Council meeting on foreign trade, the deputy minister emphasized: “This is a very serious escalation, which has come about because the European Commission, which negotiates these issues with the U.S. government on behalf of and in the name of the Member States, has been unable to reach a fair agreement with the Americans that reflects European interests in the nine months since Donald Trump’s re-election.”

According to Levente Magyar, the U.S. side is open to negotiations, and the inaction of the past months is the fault of the Brussels leadership: “We find it outrageous that the European Commission has been unable to reach an agreement in the past seven, or rather nine, months. This opportunity has existed since President Trump’s re-election last November.”

He emphasized: “Our expectation is that the Commission will find a way in the next two weeks to reach an agreement with the Americans that will avoid this 30 percent punitive tariff, because if it happens, it will undermine European competitiveness and have an extremely negative impact on our country.”

The State Secretary emphasized:

We are not willing to make Hungary, and Hungarian farmers, companies, and workers pay for the Commission’s mistakes.”

At the same time, Magyar expressed his hope that progress would be made in the coming weeks: “We do not believe that it is impossible to reach a fair agreement with the Americans. We have already successfully negotiated with President Trump on a number of issues on a bilateral basis. We expect the European Commission to be able to do the same.”
