Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, announced at the third Pro Israel conference that he has initiated the revocation of the scholarship of the student who disrupted the lecture of an Israeli professor at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).
At the III. Pro-Israel conference in Budapest organized by the Center for Fundamental Rights, Balázs Hankó emphasized that “two weeks ago, young people studying in our country crossed a line that we cannot allow.” A student participating in the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program was also involved in the incident that occurred during the Israeli professor’s lecture, hirado.hu reports.
The Minister of Culture announced that he is initiating the revocation of the scholarship of the student involved.
On its social media page, the Center for Fundamental Rights recalled that recently young people wearing Palestinian scarves disrupted a lecture by Alexander Yakobson, left-wing academic and historian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, at ELTE’s Faculty of Humanities.
In their post, they emphasized that “Hungary has zero tolerance for anti-Semitism and support for terrorist organizations.”
Balázs Hankó instructed the scholarship-managing Tempus Public Foundation to immediately reinforce in the contracts of all students studying in Hungary with a Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship that
if anyone violates the peace or security of our nation at universities, their scholarship will be immediately revoked.”
The minister signed the letter regarding this at the event organized by the Center for Fundamental Rights. “Those who do not respect that Hungary is a peaceful country have no place among scholarship holders,” they emphasized.
“Every provocation must be nipped in the bud,” wrote the minister on Facebook immediately after the incident. Balázs Hankó shared on his social media page that he had requested the leadership of ELTE to immediately investigate the incident at the institution, as Alexander Yakobson’s lecture had been violently disrupted there.
“Hungary is a peaceful country, and anyone who comes to Hungary must respect this,” the minister emphasized. He added that the government is determined to ensure that this remains the case so that people everywhere in the world can rely on it.
In his post, Balázs Hankó also published his letter to Rector Lénárd Darázs. In it, he urges the university leadership to hold accountable those affiliated with the university who were involved in the disturbances and to ensure that a peaceful environment is guaranteed in all future courses, lectures, and public events.
